Experience Dubai

Sofitel Hotel Dubai the Palm

Das Sofitel Dubai the Palm Resort & Spa.

Today I would like to tell you something about my trip to Dubai. I have had the pleasure to go there for 5 days in the end of january. It’s just the right time to travel there, because the temperatures are still nice and it won’t get too hot. I would recommend to travel there sometime during november and march, because in summer it’s too hot during the day.

In this post I would like to give you some information on how to dress in Dubai and the Emirates and give you a short overview about the city. A post about all sightseeing options in Dubai will be following and as well some travel reports about my time in Abu Dhabi and Oman. I am very happy, that you decided to join me. Let’s experience the U.A.E. together!

Our Hotel was located on the Palm. It’s a constructed island located in the ocean in front of Jumeirah. I’m sure you have heard about it before. Jumeirah is the most nice part in Dubai, where also one of the 7- Star Hotels in the world is located- The Burj al Arab. It’s constructed in the shape of a huge sail.

It was an unbelievable feeling to enter the Palm. An island made by hand. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it, but in Dubai, everything is possible right? Our hotel was one of the most beautiful ones in the world I have ever been to. The service was great, it’s just located on the handmade white sandy beach and you have a view on the Skyline of Dubai. Sofitel Dubai the Palm Resort & Spa just opened it’s doors a year ago so the rooms and whole location is very modern and nice furnished. We decided to go on the palm, because we wanted to escape the noise of the city and relax on the beach.

Did you know that there are over 500 5-Star Hotels in Dubai? And they keep building new ones all the time.

The famous Atlantis Hotel is located just a few hotels next to ours. I’m sure you have heard about it before. I visited that hotel in the Bahamas a couple years ago, when I had the chance to go there. There are just two of it worldwide. If you are going with children I would totally recommend this hotel. Everything looks like in Disneyland. They offer Dolphin Shows, a water slide park and a aquarium, next to tons of restaurants, bars and shopping possibilities.

If you decide to stay on the palm you have to plan on driving around 30 minutes by taxi to reach Downtown. But cabs are very cheap here so don’t worry. The other option is to stay right in the city centre but of course you won’t have a beach there. If you stay in the city, most hotels are skyscrapers with a swimming pool on the roof top, which is also not bad ;)

Dubai is a very various city. There are many modern and high luxury parts but you also have old and very idyllic parts of the city with some nice oriental markets and lots of culture.

If you go in the old city centre called Deira, you will find the highly recommended gold and spice souk. Souk is arabic and means market. You can shop till you drop and enjoy the cultural part of the city. You can go there by boat. The small traditional arabic boats made out of wood are called Dhaus. The River that you are going on is Dubai’s largest river, called Dubai Creek. If you would like to learn even more about the culture you can visit the Heritage Village, which is also located in Deira. It’s a museum about the time before Dubai got rich because of oil. They also give you some information about the natives of Dubai- the Beduins.

You will find many traditional dressed women in Deira. They are covered in black from top till bottom, which is called Abaya. If even the face is covered in black, they call it Burka. You can just see the eyes looking out. It can be kind of scary if you are not used to it, because you see black everywhere. It has a religious background. The Arabic people say that just men are allowed to see their wives, that’s why they have to hide in front of other people.

That’s why you have to dress mostly covered up your body when you visit the U.A.E. If you go there in mini skirts or short dresses you show that you don’t respect their religion. It’s important to cover at least your shoulders and knies. If you want to go to the mosque, woman also have to cover their hair and ankles. I recommend wide clothes, because they think it’s too sexy and also disrespectful if you are dressed in too tight pants or tops. Plus it’s better to dress like this because of the hot weather conditions. You can’t go wrong with Blouses or Tunics.

If you are not going there in summer, I would recommend to take a warm sweater for the evenings with you. As Dubai is located right in the desert, it can get very cold in the evening!

If you want to go out in the night, Dubai offers a great Nightlife! It’s a very international city and many people from other parts of the world work there. This means if you are going to the bars and nightclubs you can dress like we are used to it in Europe or USA. Everyone is dressed up and the women are wearing heels and short dresses. See why Dubai is a very varied city?

Now that you know how to dress I take you with me to the highest tower in the world the Burj Khalifa and to many other sights in Dubai. Read the next post and you will know all about it.

BTW did you know that Abu Dhabi is the richest of all sheikdoms and is just a 50 minute car drive away?

Read about it next time and also about my upcoming desert safari. Hope I was able to give you some nice impressions.
